landscape oil painting, barn early winter

Family Barns
11×14 oil on canvas

Last winter after a few days of snow, I was painting a creek en plein air (Blockhouse Creek). It was windy and partly cloudy and while I was painting this creek my eye kept wandering off to my right to my husband’s family barns each time it was bathing in sunlight. That day, I wished I had two plein air easels so I could work on both scenes at the same time but I knew it wouldn’t have worked well. I was too involved in the creek painting so I went back the a couple of days later to paint the barn. All the snow had melted but it still had a winter feel. I’m drawn to this scene because of the old weathered look, shapes and colors. Sometimes it’s just simply that. The little shed on the right, the one that’s in the shadow, is where I used to keep my bees with my brother in-law.(I’d still be keeping bees if they wouldn’t disappear and I didn’t have to buy a new colony every year.)
